Love American Style

Patriotism means love of country (patria, in the Latin) and implies a readiness to sacrifice for it, to fight for it, perhaps even to give one’s life for it. In the traditional sense, patriots are those who love their country simply because it is their country--because it is their birthplace and the mansion of their fathers," as Alexis de Tocqueville put it in his Democracy in America. It is a kind of filial piety. Fortunately for Americans there are more reasons to love this country than just being born here and more reasons to be patriotic. We may not see "eye to eye" on all issues and we may express our patriotism differently but that is just another reason to love this place, America, the United States the place we all call home. Have a great Independence Day and remember that the fireworks are a celebration of our freedom and freedom is the reason for the celebration.

QUINCY, IL --

You probably know about the money you can get when you recycle aluminum cans.

You also can get cash for something many of you work with, and just throw out, everyday -- office paper.

We found out Quincy Recycling pays a penny a pound for office paper.

We also discovered that not many people are cashing in.

As you can imagine, all of us here at KHQA use our fair share of office paper.

So Rajah Maples conducted a little experiment to see how much paper *she* uses every month and what she can get for it.

[CG in 0:35 to 0:44:2LINE\Jerrod Evans\QUINCY RECYCLING]

The news business probably isn't much different from many of your offices. For a month, I saved most of my paper and turned it into Quincy Recycling. It didn't take long for the paper to add up......I ended up with 32 pounds of paper, which translated to 32 cents at Quincy Recycling. It's not much, which might explain why many offices don't do it.

Jerrod Evans (Quincy Recycling): "We're told in the industry that 200 pounds of paper saves 17 trees. Not many people do it."

Here in the newsroom, obviously we don't have to worry about confidential information on our scripts we use for our newscasts. But if your office does have documents that contain confidential information, no problem. Quincy Recycling will shred it for you for 10 cents a pound.

Jerrod Evans: " Some people want to make sure that their documents are destroyed, so they'll sit and wait and actually watch the paper being shredded for a peace of mind. "

And the recycling industry does quite a business with your recycled office paper. It's bundled and shipped to paper mills across the country, where it goes through a process to create even more paper.

Quincy Recycling crews travel the city on Fridays to pick office paper, but that service will cost you anywhere between 20 to 25 dollars to help cover the company's labor *and* the price of gasoline.

If you want to recycle your aluminum cans, Quincy Recycling pays 60 cents per pound.

But here's something we didn't know.......that price goes up to *65* cents a pound on Saturdays, because the company is trying to get more people to recycle on their days off

Blaggo "bought" the shredder last year !

The city brings cans to QRP and gets $.50 a pound .

Food for thought

wow thanks for posting a KHQA story on my comments section. Do you want me to do something with it? I gues there is a little something there like why the city can not negotiate a better price for their cans...
